Why can’t people just say what they mean? Why do we feel we have to spin everything to make it sound more appealing? That drives me crazy.
I want truth…the sometimes painful, honest, always freeing…truth (in love of course).
I spent a few years selling cars and always found that being honest was the best. That’s right…I was one of the nearly extinct honest car salesmen. Doing it the right way always found me either on top or near the top salesmen every month, and made more money than I had made in my life. I did it by being me…honestly trying to satisfy the consumer…trying to get them what they needed…not what I thought they needed.
Truth is not a formula…it won’t spin…it does not need embellishment.
Some in the corporate world feels that it is best if they use spin to make things seem better. Remember Enron? ☹ Is that really what we want? Why do some churches and preachers feel they must employ this tactic? (Insert name of choice here) It doesn’t make the gospel any more attractive in the long run…it just hurts the kingdom mission when the spin is used. That is pretty shaky ground.
Jesus spoke the truth…in love. It wasn’t always popular, but it was always best. I imagine that when Jesus spoke, you could see and feel His compassion toward humanity. I know that is what I feel when I read His words. So why do we feel the need to exchange truth for a formula? Why do we feel we have to spin the gospel to make it more appealing?
Why not use truth with love…instead of spin with formula?
It’s just a thought!

My wife and I just got back from a Cruise to Mexico and it was AWESOME. Of course when we docked we hit the shops to browse for souvenirs. We wanted to get some t-shirts for people and stuff. When you get off the main drag in Cozumel and into the “flea market” area – all of the shop owners are trying to coax you into their store. I was wearing a T-shirt that day that said “Sarcasm – one of my many talents.” So when one of the shop operators said “Senior – come and browse my quality junk” I took him up on the offer. It was funny enough to get my attention.
I wasn’t looking for anything in particular – T-shirts, cheap necklaces, trinkets. Then I saw the chair hammocks.
We had one on the back porch that got damaged and I knew we could pick up one cheap. They had dozens of colors but since I had on my Alabama hat I was thinking – it would be nice to get one with my Favorite Color. I asked him – do you have one in this color “Rojo e Blanco” . He assured me he did and then began to rip all the hammocks off the shelf in a mad fury searching for the red and white one. I could see pretty fast there wasnt one. Red and black, Black and white, white, blue, yellow, multi color etc…not the one I wanted.
This is where it got interesting. I asked how much for a hammock and he said $35.00. I said “too much” so he countered “since you are my first customer today $25.00. I said – we’ll I really want red and white – do you have that? “I can get for you” and the search began again. He even ran to another shop or two. He came back and said “you are my first customer, how much you offer on one of these.” Again, I reiterated – “No. I want red and white – rojo e blanco”
Then he got mad and started putting the hammocks back up and I started to leave and said “Im sorry – not today.” Then he stopped me and started yelling at me – “why you make me work so hard when you know I dont have this color?” Then he accused me “You come in here and choose color you know I dont have and then waste my time – why?”
I pointed to the hat. I said – “senior I asked for THIS color because THIS is the color I want. If you dont have it – thats OK – but I am not buying another color – thank you.” Then he told another guy in the shop and he proceeded to start yelling at me too. Then they had the audacity to demand again “make an offer – name your price on what I have.”
I looked him in the eye and said “I will not take one from you for free because you had a bad attitude – I dont care what color it is. I came in here because you were funny and I thought you had a good attitude – when you developed a bad attitude, I knew I would not by from you even if you had what I wanted”
We left – and he cussed me I think.
Now – here’s the lesson. Do we do this in the church? We come up with our hip sermon series, great graphics, cool videos, themed environments and serve coffee and pastry in our worship services to try and attract people to come to our churches. Most of us have quality or excellence as a value of our church.
But when people come in are we offering them what they are truly seeking? We can’t peddle an experience to people that is void of the one thing they need more than anything else – Jesus Christ.
If our church is “cool” “hip” “trendy” “post modern” “contemporary” or even “traditional” – it doesn’t matter if the “customer” doesn’t buy – and they wont buy if we don’t have what they are looking for. No matter what wrapper you put on your church – the bottom line is people need Jesus. They need to know that even though their sins are like crimson – they can be washed whiter than snow – they need rojo e blanco. And if we don’t give them that and try and push something else on them – style, tradition, denomination, bible version, whatever – then all we are doing is asking people to browse our quality junk.
So…what does make a church a church?
Is it the music, the preaching, the pews, the fact that we take up an offering? Is it the cermonial tradition, the 501(c)3, is it the board, the elders, the choir? Is it the building, the steeple, is it the people? (sorry for the Dr. Suess’ish rhyming)
Mark Batterson wrote recently in his Evotional blog;
“I love our graphics, our website, our videos, our atlases, our outreaches, our locations. But those things aren’t primal. They aren’t what makes a church a church.
The church was birthed in Acts 2 when God poured out His spirit. Nothing has changed. You don’t need a building to be a church. And you can have a building, but without the Spirit, you don’t have a church!
The longer I pastor the more I realize that the simple things are the important things.”
Well put Mark.

This is the first part of a three part series on one of my favorite Bible stories. The story of Elijah and the widow of Sidon. The way I see it there are three main people involved in this story and we can learn from all three. There is Elijah, the mother, and the son. This series will just barely scratch the surface but I think it’s good stuff for all of us to think about. You can read the Bible story here.
—————————————————————————————-
Part 1: Elijah
The first thing I notice in this story is that the Famine is a result of something Elijah did. I realize that ultimately God brought the famine, but humanly speaking it is a result of something Elijah did. Immediately after the famine hits, he goes and hangs out (dare I say, hide? —probably not, God did tell him to go) by a ravine where he is fed everyday and he has water.
Then God tells him to get up and get moving to where there are people. I think this is significant because for the first time Elijah is going to see the results of his obedience to God. People are dying!
I’m not sure what this did to his emotions but it had to play with them to some extent. Too often we take the “heroes” of the Bible and give them “Comic Book” status. Can you imagine what it must have been like for him to walk through cities and see people everywhere he looked starving to death, and knowing in his heart that he was the one who called this famine into existence? I think it caused him to feel guilty. Perhaps this is why he says,
“O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” (Emphasis Mine)
Notice the word, “also.” I certainly wouldn’t want to build too much on this, but I think we can see from the whole of Elijah’s story that the man was emotional. One minute he’s rocking and rolling for God the next he’s hiding out because he’s afraid crying to God how he’s the only one left. Elijah was a human being who was fairly emotional this had to effect him.
Still, he obeyed what God had for him, which is more than many can say. So often we’re tempted to use lame excuses to explain why we don’t obey God. I am an emotional person, I’ve never been able to understand the stoic person who never seems to feel anything but sometimes, I have allowed those emotions to rule me. Obeying God can be hard; I would be willing to say that often it is extremely hard.
Elijah did what God told him to do and he left the consequences and responsibility up to God. What is God calling you to do right now, and maybe you’re afraid to do it? One of my favorite quotes is
“Your circumstances are not truth, God’s word is truth.”
—Ted Kahlman
God tells us that we are to pursue Him and He’ll take care of the rest. Of course, I am sure there are people reading this and they are doing what God calls them to do, in that case, as Paul says again and again, I implore you to continue standing and doing what God has called you to do.
In the near future, we’ll look at the mother in this story.

Ok…after watching the “Does God Exist?” debate with Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort representing the Christian front and Brian Sapient and Kelly representing the Atheist front, one thing became crystal clear to me…Ray Comfort should be quiet and let Kirk Cameron speak. I found Cameron made more “logical” sense and sounded much more informed than Comfort.
I watched and listened carefully (and was quite embarrassed at times for both sides) hoping that Cameron and Comfort could do what they claimed to be able to do.
And In This Corner…
Comfort and Cameron claimed they could ‘prove 100% scientifically that God exists without the use of faith or the bible‘…they failed miserably. Why make such a bold claim and then fail to follow through with that claim? Was it just so they could get a national TV audience and show just how uninformed and ridiculous Christians can look? One of the first things that Comfort did was to use the Ten Commandments in trying to prove his point…Uhhh…Hello…The last time I checked the Ten Commandments ARE in the Bible. Well…at least he didn’t use the banana to prove his point this time….he used a Coke can instead.
And In This Corner…
Brian Sapient and Kelly seemed much more prepared than their Christian counterparts, albeit they too could not inconclusively prove that God doesn’t exist.
The thing that urks me about this whole thing is that most Atheists believe that for one to believe in God is ‘not logical, irrational, and just plain stupid’ as stated by Sapient and Kelly. How can believing in evolution or the big bang theory be logical? There is no scientific proof…just theory and speculation.
The best thing about the whole evening was Martin Bashir. He was much more informed , logical and rational than either party, and was really trying to get the original question answered….by anyone!
Watch the debate…if you have time…then come back and let us know what you think. But please…keep it civil and interesting!
Today we mourn the loss of our friend Jerry Falwell. I have no doubts that the opinions of Dr. Falwell range across a broad spectrum of love, hate, admiration, and annoyance from all walks of life. There is one thing that cannot be disputed – Dr. Falwell was passionate about Jesus and the Church and MILLIONS of people have been impacted by his life. There is no doubt that his legacy will continue to impact lives for years to come.
I would like to think that what I am doing in Decatur Alabama at Crosspoint Church would make an impact in the world long after I am gone. May he find me faithful until the end.
I think sometimes the reason Jesus isn’t relevant is Christians (including me probably) treat Jesus like the magic 8 ball. Like he’s not even real. (notice real). Remember those? They were hoot when I was a kid. King of Queens had a good episode about the Metalo – the fortune teller that answered all your questions. Funny stuff! Don’t we do that though? Sometimes we treat Jesus like the lucky rabbit’s foot or the sky fairy or genie in the magic lamp.
This novelty item called “The Submissive Jesus” promoted by an atheist kind of sums up the mentality that Jesus is here for us rather than the other way around.
The idea is that if you twist the crown of thorns into Submissive Jesus skull he will be forced to answer your prayer. At $29.95 (with a $10 rebate if you purchase before Mother’s Day)The Submissive Jesus says 100 random phrases and comes with:
26 page instruction manual
Dinner with God coupon
Freedom from Hell coupon
Warranty for 40 days and 40 nights
Their commercials are almost pornographic so reader – beware if you go to their web site. Here is the tamest of them (this should pop up a windows media player) and represents the mentality I think many Christians have regarding Jesus and prayer. More alarmingly this is the perception that non-Jesus followers have about us!
Here’s my question – what are we doing to CHANGE this perception?

WHAT???…I thought this was a blog about being ‘Relevant’!
It is!
What is more relevant than getting back to the basics of what the Gospel is…..
Jesus Christ, crucified, risen, living in mans heart!
In Him there is forgiveness of sins, healing, peace, comfort and rest.
It is not because of any works that I have done…it’s not because I keep all or most of the commandments…it is only because of His grace and mercy.
It is because He saw fit to extend an invitation for all mankind to believe in Him and be saved…and I accepted that invitation. That’s it! Nothing more…nothing less.
The Christian mission…simple…“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled”. Luke 14:23
Yes…there is more expected after the acceptance, but the acceptance IS the foundation on which we build from.
Get them in the door…present them with the Gospel of a savior that loved them so much that He laid down His life for them that they might have abundant life, THEN disciple them. Then show them that they can live a better life by living the way indicated by scripture. Not tradition!
Today’s generation is looking for an authentic, relational spiritual experience. They are not afraid of the cost. They are not afraid to take a stand. They are not weak.
What they don’t want…lifeless, non-relational, irrelevant, weak, going-thru-the-motions Christianity.
Denominational arguments are a waste of time and energy.
The way the First Baptistyrian Pentelutheran Orthodox Charismatic Church in Christ does things may not work for you…and vice versa.
Each church has a mandate….reach your community for Christ.
“I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.” 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
How you do it depends on you! How will you reach your community?

Like most dads, I’m obsessed with my kids. It amazes me how much they’ve changed my life. So about a year ago I bought Kenny Chesney’s song, There Goes My Life. It’s a country crooner and it touches me every time I listen to it. There is another song on that CD though that talks about change. The lyrics go in part like this:
His old man was a rebel yeller, bad boy to the bone, and say can’t trust a color feller, he
judge em by the tone of their skin. He was raised to think like his dad narrow mind full of
hate on the road to no where fast till the grace of god got in the way then he saw the light n
hit he’s knees n cried and said a prayer, rose up a brand new man n left the old one right
there[Chorus:]
Here’s to the strong, thanks to the brave don’t give up hope some people change
against all odds, against the grain love finds a way, some people change.
You can read all the words here. Now, the thing is that song is powerful. It talks about the power that is people changing. The great thing is that idea is not new with Mr. Chesney. In fact we read these powerful words in I Corinthians 6:
8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters. 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
That is the essence of the Gospel; God changes people. I mean look at the first story of conflict we see in the Bible. God says to Cain:
6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.
Did you catch it? Cain, if you do what is right, you will be accepted. In other words, Cain Change! The rest of the Bible is about God changing people. He uses a man who’s very name mean “dishonest”, he uses a harlot, He changes a murderer into someone who is responsible for an entire nation. He changes a scaredy cat into a man of courage. Most importantly He changes hurt and shattered people into redeemed people. He buys them from the despair that is their life. And this is what he offers you. Whatever the situation is in your life, God can change it. He offers you the same opportunity He offered those people in Corinth. He will change your life, He will take it and wash it clean. You don’t have to be in addiction, you don’t have to be depressed, you don’t have to be a gossip, you don’ t have to be someone who causes strife, you don’t have to be anything that is destroying your life. God will wash you. The greatest evidence for the world that there is a God is a body of Christ Followers who can say, “I used to be that, but by God’s grace I am now this.” In a world that is b
lowing itself up trying to feel something, how powerful is that message?
Whoever you are, wherever you’re at God can change you. The message of the Bible is not a list of rules or a platform to learn enough to say, “I’m right, and you’re on your way to Hell because you disagree with me.” The message of the Bible is a story about a Holy God inviting you to Trust Him. Thank God for that. I know I’m a different man because of His grace.
